When companies come together through acquisition or merger, shareholders benefit from lower costs and new revenues. However, until the companies are successfully integrated the benefits are merely statements and not reality. I worked with this UK company to help them integrate the Operations and IT of businesses they’d bought in Central Europe and North Africa. Up to this time the acquired companies had been running independently with full responsibility for their P&Ls. I was the advocate of the teams in the countries being integrated, visiting them to understand their business, what made them successful and to develop mutual understanding and trust. Working with the Regional Operations Director and a wide group of stakeholders, I established the integration’s scope and a clear (non-technical) description of what success would look like. I engaged lawyers and compliance teams to ensure the legal and regulatory landscape was understood and factored into the integration’s design. During the integration I worked with the delivery teams to ensure we all protected the agreed objectives, scope and quality. The go live successfully implemented corporate email, IT infrastructure, networks and data centres. It rolled out local-language policies for Information Security and Data Protection. It fully embedded support staff “in-country” to group-standard operations.
