Who is Julian Rains?
I am a business improvement specialist with 18 years’ experience as a consultant and analyst, both freelance and at Accenture. I have worked to design and deliver change in companies across a range of industries. Some of my clients have been Willis Towers Watson, AXA, Hiscox, Shell, BP, Barclays and HSBC. I have also worked for small and medium-sized companies. Typically, my focus is operational – finding and delivering solutions to reduce costs, streamline processes and increase revenues.
What sort of work do I do?
I help businesses in a number of ways. For example:
- Analyse and evaluate specific issues, areas of the business, projects or services
- Streamline processes to save time and/or money through efficiencies
- Adapt processes to allow for greater customer service leading to increased customer retention, order sizes and more referrals
- Clarify objectives, business plans and communications to increase teams’ focus and engagement
- Shape and cost new initiatives or projects to ensure business value
- Plan and lead implementation and roll out
Why should I be your first choice?
In a nutshell, I am very good at helping teams to focus to ensure that investments in change achieve objectives which add real value. I bring a structured approach, clear direction and an impartial yet experienced perspective. I am adept both at communicating clearly with people of all levels and applying discretion and confidentiality as appropriate.
How do I work?
It depends on the situation but normally I will spend time with key people in the organisation and look at data or other information to understand the real issues as well as what and who is critical to success. If appropriate I will look outside the business to gain an external perspective. This analysis will inform the proposal I will draw up to take your business forward.
I have found that a collaborative approach, working in a “lean” and “agile” way – making smaller, faster changes, testing their efficacy, adapting them if necessary before rolling them out – increases the likelihood of success. I will always work to a plan so you’re aware what I’m doing and when.
When will I finish?
Project duration depends on the situation; you may need me for an ad hoc brief project or an ongoing retained relationship, either part-time or full-time. This will depend on the resource you have in place already and what you are looking to improve in your business, by when. What you can be sure of is clarity around timescales before we start and regular updates throughout the project.
What will the solution look like?
Every solution is unique. Internally-focused change is typically a combination of improving technology, processes and the way people are organised and measured. Externally-focused initiatives bring change the way in which the organisation relates to its markets, products, services, customers or suppliers.
What does it cost?
I charge for my time and expenses. All fees will be agreed in advance of the work commencing. The first meeting to discuss your situation and how I can be of use is always free with no obligation.
